Nigerian Communications Commission Approves 50% Tariff Hike for Telecom Operators

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has given its nod for telecom operators to adjust their tariffs in response to prevailing market conditions.

A statement from the NCC explained that the decision was made following extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the public and private sectors.

Specifically,the approved tariff adjustment is capped at a maximum of 50% of current tariffs, which is lower than the over 100% requested by some network operators.

The NCC considered ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability when arriving at this decision.

Tariff rates have remained unchanged since 2013, despite increasing operational costs faced by telecom operators, and their agitations.

The approved adjustment,it is believed , will address the significant gap between operational costs and current tariffs, ensuring that service delivery to consumers is not compromised.

The NCC has prioritized striking a balance between protecting telecom consumers and ensuring the sustainability of the industry.

The Commission took cognizance of the financial pressures faced by Nigerian households and businesses and urged the operators implement these adjustments transparently and fairly.

Operators are required to educate and inform the public about the new rates while demonstrating measurable improvements in service delivery.
